A Day in the Life of a Fire Alarm Systems Technician


RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Fire Alarm Systems Technician is based out of the Fire Systems Cache in Gardiner, MT and performs fire alarm system maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and testing throughout Yellowstone National Park. This is a year-round, full-time, FLSA non-exempt position. Company housing is not provided for this position.

The Fire Alarm Systems Technician is responsible for:

  • Performing NFPA and National Park Service (NPS) required inspections and testing of fire alarm systems in Xanterra operated buildings located in the developed locations within Yellowstone National Park (Gardiner, Mammoth Hot Springs, Canyon Village, Old Faithful, Lake Yellowstone Area, Grant Village, Madison Campground and Roosevelt Lodge).
  • Reviewing contractor provided designs for new fire alarm system installations to ensure NFPA standards and that the completed installation meets all code and contractual requirements.
  • Overseeing contracted fire alarm system repair and maintenance work to ensure code, NPS and Xanterra requirements / standards and contractual requirements are satisfied.
  • Coordinating fire alarm system maintenance, repair, inspection and testing activities with Location Maintenance staffs, Location Operations staffs and the National Park Service.
  • Training seasonal Fire System Crew staff in proper alarm system repair, maintenance, inspection and testing procedures and practices.
  • Training Location Maintenance and Operations staff in basic alarm system principles, inspection and troubleshooting.
  • Compliance with Xanterra’s sustainability program.
  • Perform of other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:


SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

The Fire Alarm Systems Technician must possess:

  • A National Institute of Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Fire Alarm Technician Certification (Inspection & Testing of Fire Alarm Systems – Level II or higher) or equivalent factory training.
  • The ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Experience in the installation and maintenance of fire alarm systems.
  • A strong working knowledge of electrical and electronics theory and principles.
  • Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association codes applicable to the inspection, testing, maintenance and performance standards of fire alarm, fire sprinkler systems, and portable fire extinguishers.
  • Knowledge of and experience using the materials and equipment common to the trade.
  • The ability to troubleshoot and alarm system deficiencies, and then to determine proper corrective actions.
  • Basic personal computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office software (particularly Outlook, Word and Excel). Must have the ability to input basic information into existing word and spreadsheet computer documents.
  • Must be at least 21 years old and possess a current, valid, driver’s license with a good driving record for the past 3 years. This position will require you to pass a DOT Physical.
  • Must have programming experience and basic word and spreadsheet development.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The Fire Alarm Systems Technician:

  • Must be capable of lifting and moving objects weighing up to 70 pounds.
  • Must possess the physical stamina to withstand heavy, labor-related work in an outside environment, including standing, bending, kneeling and crawling for extended period of time when required.
  • Must be able to walk long distances over uneven terrain and climb stairs and ladders in all types of weather conditions.
  • This position may require the use of respiratory protection and will require compliance with applicable regulations, including a clean-shaven face.


AUTHORITIES:

The Fire Alarm Systems Technician is authorized and required to:

  • Stop work when unsafe conditions exist.
  • Inform the National Park Service “Authority Having Jurisdiction” and the Xanterra Assistant Director – Projects of system impairments.
  • Communicate fire system status with the National Park Service Communications Center.
